Digital Publishing Revolutionizes Storytelling: A New Era for Writers

During the Covid lockdown, as the world came to a standstill, people sought solace in their own private worlds. While some turned to baking bread and tending to balcony gardens, others indulged in endless streaming. Varsha Shrivastava, a homemaker based in Delhi, chose a quieter path. She picked up her phone and started typing.

Without any formal writing background or aspirations of becoming an author, Varsha had downloaded the Pratilipi app out of curiosity. She wrote because she carried stories in her heart and suddenly found the time to share them.

What began as a personal escape soon blossomed into something much larger. Readers discovered her stories, shared them, left comments, and eagerly awaited updates. Today, her trilogy Murdon ki Train has garnered over 17 million reads on Pratilipi.

"It was my very first story, and I never imagined it would resonate this widely," Varsha reminisces. "That story marked the start of my writing journey. Today, I write regularly and have crafted numerous series, but this one will always hold a special place in my heart."

Varsha is not alone in her journey.

A new era of discovery

A new generation of writers is embracing the potential of digital publishing, realizing that it can propel their creativity into uncharted storytelling realms. Priya Yadav's Bedard Piya has been transformed into a generative-AI animated series in collaboration with Teevra Studios, while Priti Jadhav's Charitraheen is being adapted for the screen in partnership with Roy Kapur Films.

Seema Jain saw her short story Bahurani acquired by The Viral Fever (TVF), and Vinod Kumar Dave's Kaali Parchai has evolved into a full-fledged motion-comic episodic series under Pratilipi Films. These stories, born as words on a screen, now unfold through animations, visuals, and performances, pushing the boundaries of storytelling.

"Varsha began writing on the app as a pastime during the lockdown," says Ranjeet Pratap Singh, co-founder and CEO of Pratilipi. "Today, she stands as one of our top-selling authors."

Varsha's stories transcended mere text, evolving into hit comics, audio dramas, motion-graphic adaptations, and animated versions. One adaptation is even in the works for a major OTT release.

Once deemed implausible within the confines of traditional publishing, such journeys are now becoming part of a quiet yet profound revolution unfolding worldwide. This revolution takes place online, across languages, predominantly on mobile screens, and is primarily driven by readers and writers themselves.

Launched a decade ago in Bengaluru, Pratilipi was founded on a simple belief: everyone should have the freedom to read and write in their heart language. Its name, derived from Sanskrit, means "copy," symbolizing how stories both reflect and shape society.

From this belief sprang one of India's largest online self-publishing platforms, offering literature in 12 major Indian languages. Users publish and consume stories, poems, essays, novels, and serialized fiction, engaging directly with authors and fellow readers through comments, subscriptions, and messages, fostering a vibrant literary community.

The platform hosts over 15 million published stories by one million authors, with nearly 10 million active readers. These figures signify a significant shift, granting readers access to stories reflecting their diverse worlds, not just in urban areas but also in small towns, villages, and cultural niches previously overlooked by mainstream publishing.

While Pratilipi stands out as a key player, it represents a broader and rapidly expanding self-publishing ecosystem attracting more readers and writers. Over the past decade, digital-first platforms have empowered writers, offering control over their work through eBooks, print-on-demand, and global distribution.

In the global arena, Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) remains influential, enabling writers to reach global audiences through eBooks and paperbacks. Digital platforms like Google Play Books, Kobo Writing Life, and Apple Books open up new avenues for readers worldwide.

Previously, publishing followed a narrow and stringent path, with authors facing challenges in visibility and acceptance. Digital platforms have shattered those barriers, allowing anyone with a story to publish, instantly reaching large audiences. This democratization of authorship has transformed the publishing landscape, offering writers real-time feedback and diverse opportunities for growth.

Women writers leading the way

One remarkable aspect of Pratilipi is the prevalence of women writers, with around 55% of its authors being female, many of whom are top performers. This trend creates a literary space where women, often writing in their mother tongues, find readership, confidence, and creative identity.

"Readers provide continuous encouragement and share feedback," notes Singh, "while experienced authors mentor new writers on enhancing their craft."

Traditional publishing favored safe and commercially viable genres for large markets. In contrast, online platforms enable niche interests to thrive. Success no longer hinges on a publisher's approval but on reader engagement.

The result is a storytelling universe that seamlessly spans various mediums. "Everyone deserves to share their story," emphasizes Singh. This revolution's strength lies in the belief that literature should be accessible to all storytellers.
