E-Cigarettes Help Smokers Quit, but Experts Caution on Health Risks

Nicotine e-cigarettes have been found to be more effective in helping smokers quit than traditional methods like gums and patches, according to a new study from the University of Oxford. However, growing concerns about their long-term health impacts have sparked increased scrutiny of these products.

The study, published in Addiction journal, reviewed 14 systematic reviews and concluded that nicotine e-cigarettes are more successful than nicotine replacement therapies (NRT), such as gums and patches, in supporting smoking cessation. The researchers also developed an ‘Evidence and Gap Map’ to identify areas needing further research.

Dr. Angela Difeng Wu, senior researcher at Oxford, emphasized the consistency of the evidence: "E-cigarettes are effective at helping people stop smoking. The evidence is clear and consistent across all the meta-analyses we consulted."

However, the study also highlighted that while e-cigarettes appear effective for quitting, evidence regarding serious health risks is still inconclusive. For other health concerns, the risks seem comparable to those of traditional treatments.

E-Cigarettes: Effective Yet Not Without Risk

E-cigarettes have long been considered a potential alternative for smokers, with growing evidence supporting their role in helping people quit. While experts agree that the best option is always to quit smoking entirely, many believe e-cigarettes can be a valuable tool for those trying to kick the habit.

A 2024 Cochrane review found that nicotine e-cigarettes helped two to five additional people out of every 100 users quit smoking, compared to traditional nicotine replacement products like patches or gum. However, despite these positive findings, e-cigarettes continue to face regulatory hurdles and public debate, especially regarding their long-term safety.

Are E-Cigarettes Harmless?

The debate over e-cigarettes’ safety continues to evolve, as these products have only been available for a short period. While recent studies show that e-cigarettes may reduce exposure to harmful chemicals compared to traditional cigarettes, experts caution that they are not without risks.

A February 2026 study noted that while e-cigarettes have not shown a direct link to cancer in human studies, they do expose users to carcinogenic chemicals. Compared to traditional tobacco, however, e-cigarettes significantly reduce the intake of cancer-causing substances.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns about e-cigarettes, particularly their growing use among younger populations. In 2025, the WHO reported that over 100 million people globally are now using e-cigarettes, including at least 15 million children aged 13-15. The WHO warned that this trend is leading to a new wave of nicotine addiction, particularly among youth.

The Path Forward: Balancing E-Cigarettes’ Benefits and Risks

While e-cigarettes may offer smokers a better alternative to traditional tobacco, experts urge caution, especially regarding long-term health effects and the appeal to younger users. With continued research and regulation, it is essential to evaluate both the benefits of using e-cigarettes for smoking cessation and the potential risks, particularly for non-smokers and the younger generation.

The bottom line is clear: while e-cigarettes may help some individuals quit smoking, they are not without risks, and more research is needed to fully understand their long-term health effects.
